Designing for Innovation: How a Healthcare Company Optimized their Activity-Based Workspace

A continuous workplace investment is built on a design strategy where functionality and employee well-being serve as the foundation for its evolution. According to a leading global healthcare company, "a thoughtfully designed workspace is more than just a physical location, it is a powerful tool to enhance employee well-being, foster deep collaboration, and drive the innovations of tomorrow." Their aspiration was to create "world-class environments and seamless experiences for our people, empower them to excel regardless of how or where they work."

When this healthcare company expanded its laboratory diagnostic manufacturing facility, they partnered with Heartwork to pilot an ambitious new vision for the workplace, transforming traditional boundaries into dynamic, shared environments optimized for their high-performing R&D team.

Rethinking the Flow of Innovation

Rethinking the Flow of Innovation

"In this space, work is fluid; our employees move constantly between the technical precision of the lab and the collaborative energy of the office," says the company’s Head of Workplace. Historically, these two functional worlds have been separated by closed walls but for this pilot project, the team made a conscious design choice to blur those boundaries.

By integrating extensive glass partitioning throughout the facility, they created a direct visual link between the lab and the workspace. "We don’t believe lab work should be hidden behind closed walls; instead, we’ve made the innovation process visible, celebrating the innovation that defines our company."

The Building Block cabinetswith Building Block planters helped clearly distinguish areas without closing off the spaces entirely.

Creating the "Anchor Point" in an Unassigned World

Creating the "Anchor Point" in an Unassigned World

While an unassigned seating model offers freedom, it creates a practical hurdle: Where does everyone put their things? To anchor this flexible ecosystem which the company called “Activity Based Working”, they integrated Heartwork Smart Lockersacross the floor plan. “By combining smart technology with a sophisticated design, we ensure that everyday employee experience is user-friendly, flexible and inspiring.”

"In an unassigned seating environment, the Heartwork Smart Lockers play a vital role as the essential ‘anchor point’ for our people," notes the team’s design lead. The lockers provide "a secure, personal home base that empower employees to move freely between focus zones and collaborative neighborhoods without being weighed down by belongings." Furthermore, their "clean, architectural language complements our interior vision directly, reducing visual clutter and maintaining the professional, high-end atmosphere we strive for."

Key Takeaways for Building Shared Environments

Key Takeaways for Building Shared Environments

The pilot project offers an inspiring blueprint for any organization, healthcare or otherwise, looking to transition to shared, flexible environments:

  • Make Innovation Visible: Use architectural elements like glass partitioning or lower barriers like storage and planters to break down literal and psychological silos between different working teams.
  • Establish Intentional Anchor Points: Transitioning to unassigned seating requires giving people a secure, reliable "home base" like personal lockers to avoid workplace friction.
  • Invest in Flexible Longevity: Select modular, premium products that elevate the atmosphere and possess the structural durability to adapt as organizational needs evolve.
